Forbidden fruit

From 1921 until 2011, Australia disallowed apples imported from New Zealand due to the perceived risk of fireblight.

Sculpture background

Dibble's Fruits of the Garden sits at the edge of Frank Kitts Park, with the harbour as its backdrop.

Framed by ferns, an apple sits on Polynesian female torso, evoking the combined imagery of the Garden of Eden and the Pacific.

Paul Dibble may also be familiar as the sculptor of the New Zealand War Memorial in Hyde Park, London.

"Intent to Construct"

There is a documentary available covering the creation of Dibble's Pacific Monarch in front of the Manawatu Art Gallery, Palmerston North: Intent to Construct (available on nzonscreen.com)
